Cyanobacteria are an important group of photoautotrophic organisms that can synthesize valuable bio-products by harnessing solar energy. They are endowed with high photosynthetic efficiencies and diverse metabolic capabilities that confer the ability to convert solar energy into a variety of biofuels and their precursors. Genome-scale models were created for five species of Cyanothece using a workflow discussed in Mueller et al which uses the previously published iCyt773 model and reviewed annotations from the Uniprot and NCBI Protein Clusters databases and annotations generated from the RAST method.

The iCyc792 model of Cyanothece PCC 7424 contains 1242 reactions, 1107 metabolites, and 792 genes. It contains 41 reactions not found in any of the other 4 Cyanothece models generated in this study. All reactions are charge and elementally balanced and localized into four compartments, the cytosol, periplasm, thylakoid lumen, and carboxysome.
